Kathleen E. Taylor was born on February 10, 1905, in England, the daughter of Franklin T. and Ada (Holmes) Taylor. Her family immigrated to the United States and settled in Los Angeles, California, around 1913. Little is known of her education and career, however by the early 1930s, she is listed as a working artist in Los Angeles. She married Foster Blatchford Upper, also an artist, and the couple lived in Venice, California.
