Kenneth Perrin Becker was born in Berwyn, Illinois in 1913, the son of a lithography company executive. He had serious asthma as a child and his father took him on many trips to Wyoming, New Mexico and Arizona, among other destinations, to alleviate the symptoms of his breathing problems. As a result of the travel, Ken developed a passionate love for the western and southwestern territory, mountains and deserts and old shacks, adding to his appreciation of his own midwestern landscape. He was entranced with the power and dynamism of nature along with its delicate beauty. After studying at a boarding school in Santa Fe, New Mexico, he returned to finish high school in Hinsdale, Illinois, where his parents and sister had moved. He drew in ske
