Lee Friedlander is became a well-known street photographers in the 1960s. In 1956, he moved to New York City where he began photographing musicians and other city dwellers. His work is often compared to the Depression-era photograher, Walker Evans, for its raw and simple depictions of everyday life.
Typically using black and white photography, Friedlander captures ordinary scenes with subtle documentary qualities. In 1960, the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation awarded Friedlander his first grant. In 1963 the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House gave Friedlander his first solo museum show.
