Born in Oakland, California on February 3, 1891, Leslie (ne Edward Leslie Smith) worked as a commercial artist in San Francisco from the 1920s on. For many years he worked as an advertising agent for the Progress Printing Company. During the 1930s he established the Student Art Center in Oakland where he taught commercial art. As well as an artist, he was also an accomplished musician who formed the group which later became the Oakland Symphony. Leslie died in Marin County, California on November 1, 1960.
