Biography Lewis Cohen
A tonalist* landscapist as well as painter of figure and genre scenes, Lewis Cohen was born in London to American parents, and grew up in New York City. He attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, graduating in 1878. Ill health led him to abandon studies of medicine. Supported by personal wealth, he spent recuperative time in the Adirondacks and five years in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It was during this period he developed his artistic talents, which had been a youthful hobby.
In 1884, he enrolled in the Slade School of Art* in London, and later studied with J. Watson Nicoll and portraitist A.S. Cope. In Paris, he was a student of Alphonse Legros, and remained in France for nearly 20 years
