Lewis Peter Clover, painter, was born in New York City, February 20 1819, the son of Lewis P. and Bridgette (Murphy) Clover; grandson of Peter and Martha (Cooper) Clover; and a descendant of Peter Clover of Salisbury, England, and of Ashley Cooper.
He was educated in his native city and at the College of St. James near Hagerstown, Maryland. He studied painting with William Page and Asher B. Durand and established studios in New York City and Baltimore, Maryland.
He was married 7 September 1840, to Sarah Ann, daughter of Matthew Van Ben
