Lia Mittarakis was born in the Lapa district, and lived on Paqueta Island in the Guanabara Bay during the most part of her life. She held several different jobs such as secretary, cashier, accountant and teacher.
She started painting only after her husband's death in 1964. Since then, she has become internationally know. In 1969, she was invited to take part in the INSITA 69 (International Triennal of naive art) and exhibited in Brazil and abroad from then on.
Passionately fond of Rio de Janeiro, she never tired of painting the town from every angle, and she multiplied the views of the same site. She usually used the bird's-eye view, thus capturin
