Biography Lila Hahn
Interested primarily in Native American pueblo dancers of northern New Mexico, Lila Hahn works in the medium of batik, but applies her dyes with 3-inch sponge brushes rather than with the traditional dipping technique. She is convinced that this method allows her to achieve a more even, richer saturation of color. Her subjects also include wildlife and landscape.
After one dye application is dry, she waxes over the color she want to remain, re-dampens the silk with water and applies the next dye. After the final dye, she outlines each of her figures with thin black lines, meaning she has to wax all areas where these lines appear. It is a painstaking process.
