Biography   Lodewijk Schelfhout

Lodewijk Schelfhout, grandson of the renowned landscape painter Andreas Schelfhout, gained a reputation with his cubist paintings.  Together with Piet Mondriaan and Jan Toorop he spent a long period in Paris.  Here Schelfhout found inspiration the work of Paul Cézanne as well as that of Vincent van Gogh and was the painter who brought cubism to The Netherlands.

After his stay in Paris, Schelfhout opened an art gallery in Amsterdam where he exhibited works by his contemporaries.  Even at an advanced age Schelfhout undertook many travels and his impressions of these resulted in a more historical style of painting.
