Biography   Louis Eyth

Louis Eyth is known for his historical paintings of Texas and historical figures of Texas history, and his work can be found at the Texas State Capitol. In addition to painting and illustrating, he was a fine art teacher as well.

Eyth was born in Prussia and came to the Untied States in 1852, settling in Galveston, Texas. Following the Civil War, he was employed by the Blessing Brothers, Pioneer Texas photographers in Galveston, where he enhanced the photographs with oil, pastel or watercolor.

Eyth moved to Houston, Texas in 1870 and was commissioned by the State of Texas in 1873 to copy an early portrait of Stephen F. Austin. Eyth worked in San Antonio during which time he produced illustrations for James DeShields: "Surrende   ...  Displaying 750 of 1120 characters.
