Louise Tuthill Hay was born in 1910 in Richmond Hill, New York. As a child and later, she summered on Shelter Island, Long Island, where her ancestors had first arrived in 1730. Tuthills were among the earliest white settlers of Long Island, venturing from Massachusetts to Southold with that town's original founders in September 1640.
Hay became interested in art and antiques at an early age, and traveled extensively with her parents. In 1928 at age eighteen, she attended the Art Students League, during which time John Waters (1883 - ?) painted her portrait. In the late 1940s, Hay moved to Shelter Island, where she painted local landscapes in the lively plein air style of other East End artists, including Whitney Myron Hubbard
