Biography   Lucie Rie


Born in Austria as Lucie Gomperz,  she married Hans Rie in 1926.  In the late 1930s, she settled in London alone and  established her ceramics studio at Albion Mews.

One of the most eminent studio potters, Dame Lucie Rie began her career in her native Vienna as a student of ceramist Michael Powolny at the Kustgewerbeschule.  Establishing her first studio in 1925, Lucie Rie began exhibiting at international exhibitions immediately, having her work selected by Josef Hoffman for inclusion in the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels in Paris.  Over the next decade she devoted herself to experimenting with glaze and form, carefully recording her progress in notebooks that are today pre   ...  Displaying 750 of 1070 characters.
