Lydia Hess was born in Newaygo where he father had moved from New York to seek a lumber fortune from Michigan’s virgin forest. He built a sawmill on what is still known as Hess Lake. The family later moved to Chicago.
Lydia, who showed early signs of talent in art, became a student at the Chicago Art Institute and later studied in Europe and exhibited at the Paris Salon. She was married in 1895 to Charles D. Lowry, a Chicago school principal, and continued her career in art while raising a family of five children.
