Biography   Madeline Wynne

Born in Newport, New York, Madeline Wynne was one of the pioneers of metalwork in the Arts and Crafts movement. She was also a painter in oil and watercolor of portraits, landscapes, and figural subjects.

She grew up in a household where creativity and working in metal was encouraged. Her father was the inventor of the Yale lock. She studied painting at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School in 1877, and then taught drawing. She also studied at the Art Students League in New York with Walter Shirlaw and later went to Europe.

In her metalwork, she applied what she had learned about color harmonies and did consciously unrefined, simplified, natural looking objects that were intended to show the integrity of their materials rather   ...  Displaying 750 of 1069 characters.
