Margaret Boyd Bush was born in Albany, NY on Nov. 20, 1856 into a large
Sottish family. Margaret Boyd was educated at Albany Female Academy. In 1877 she married
Archibald Bush; however, her husband died on their honeymoon of mastoiditis. Months later she
gave birth to a baby who lived only a few months. The widow then traveled and visited with
relatives both in Scotland and New York. While in Europe, she studied drawing. In 1884 she made
her first trip to California where her brother had established a ranch near Santa Barbara. For
years to come she visited family in Santa Barbara and left many watercolors and sketches of that
area. Seldom seen, her works remain in the hands of relatives.
