Margaret Campbell Macpherson (1860-1931)
Born into the merchant aristocracy of St John's, Newfoundland, Margaret Macpherson completed her education in Edinburgh and Switzerland. Beginning in 1885, she exhibited with the Royal Scottish Academy and the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, before commencing studies in Paris with Gustave Courtois and Pascal Dagnan Bouveret in 1889.
A member of the progressive Society of Scottish Artists since its establishment in 1892, she shared an exhibition with Josephine Hoxie Bartlett at Aitkin Dott’s Edinburgh Gallery in 1895; arranged extensive exhibitions of her own work in St John’s and Halifax, in 1896, 1899, and 1900; and sent paintings to twenty-six Paris Salons between 1894 and 1926, a re
