Margaret Hilbiber Baylis was born in Tacoma, WA on Nov. 26, 1912. At age 16 "Maggie" Hilbiber was enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania. During the Depression she worked for the Tacoma Times before moving to San Francisco in 1938. She then worked for Sunset magazine before opening a graphics studio.
There she met her husband-to-be, Douglas Baylis, a noted landscape architect. Following his death in 1971, the widow turned to writing and illustrating a dozen books on house plants.
In 1989 she moved to Sonoma, CA where she remained until her demise on Dec. 10, 1997.
