Margaret Putnam was known for her innovative techniques, her love of brilliant color and willingness to 'break and make the rules to achieve a desired effect.' She was basically self-taught and worked in oil, watercolor, wax resist, casein, and pastel, and some of her work was abstract.
She had a background in fashion illustration where she used color, texture, and design in her male and female figures. She continued to work full time even after becoming partially paralyzed from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease), saying "I paint seven days a week because there is nothing else I would rather do."
