Margaret Young Murray
Margaret Young Murray — artist and teacher known to be working in the
late1890s and early to mid 1900s— was born in 1875 and died
in1962. Murray studied art in New York City under Kenyon Cox
(1856-1919) and John White Alexander (1856-1915); Boston, MA; and in
Paris at the Académie Julian.
She is best remembered for her many informal sketches of immigrants as
they waited to register at Ellis Island, NY. Her sketches display
the naturalistic realism of a tired, frustrated group at a crowded
registration center, yet each drawing portrays a unique individual's
