Born
in Tacoma, Washington, on March 18, 1903, she studied painting and
sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts, San Diego (1921-1923),
California School of Fine Arts, San Francisco (1923-1925), and the Art
Students League, New York (1926-1929). After her return to San
Francisco in 1929, her interests turned to jewelry design, and she
subsequently studied metal craft with Armin Hairenian. While continuing
to paint, de Patta devoted more and more time to her metal work, and by
1935 she had a workshop in her home.
In 1941, she went to
Chicago, Illinois, to study with Laszlo Moholy-Nagy at the School of
