Painter, draughtsman and printmaker Margarethe E. Heisser was born March 31, 1871, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she grew up. One of the first woman artists to paint western subjects in the upper Mid-West, she died tragically at the young age of thirty-seven. As early as 1897 she exhibited a drawing of Thunder Cloud, a Sioux Indian, at the annual exhibition of the Minneapolis Art League.
Paintings done during a visit in the summer of 1907 to the reservation of the Gros Ventres at Fort Berthold, North Dakota, are said to be her most important. The state of North Dakota purchased three"Bear's Necklace", "The Mink Woman" and "Bad Brave"resulting in a commission to paint twelve more. However, just prior to leaving for the Fort Totten
