A Boston born society woman, she was, from the early 1920s to the mid 1930s, a skilled portrait painter of the upper-class world in which she lived. Her work has been described as being similar to that of Matisse but not as soothing in tone because she deliberately used dissonant colors and some disturbing psychological elements.
She was the fourth cousin of John Singer Sargent and very much a part of the cultural set of early 20th-century Boston and New York including George Luks, Harpo Marx, and Betty Parsons. She was plagued by alcoholism and mental breakdowns in her later life.
In 1996, Berry-Hill Gallery of New York City had a retrospective of her paintings including subjects that were self-confident society young ladies,
