Margaretta S. Favorite Brown was born in McConnellsville, PA in 1818. "Maggie" Favorite left the East to join a married sister in northern California and in 1857 wed miner Jonas Brown in Yreka. She began painting about that time and used earth pigments which the Indians may have taught her how to mix. In 1864 she and her husband left for the gold fields in Idaho where she remained until her demise on Nov. 2, 1897.
