Biography Marguerite Tew
Sculptor Marguerite Rose Tew was born on January 6, 1885, in Magdalena, New Mexico, growing up from an early age with paternal grandparents in Arcola, Illinois. From 1905-1908, she taught in the Warren County, Pennsylvania public schools, and, in 1909-1910 in Philadelphia. In 1909, she received a special diploma, with a major in fine arts, from Teachers College, Columbia University. In 1911 she graduated from the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Arts. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts at night in 1908-1909, then day classes in 1911-1915. In 1913, she was awarded a Cresson Traveling Scholarship to Europe. Her teachers included Charles Grafly, Thomas Anschutz, William Merritt Chase, and Leslie W. Miller.
