Although the term 'vanitas' appears most frequently in inventories after 1650 (A. Chong and W. Kloek, Still-Life Paintings from the Netherlands 1550-1720, Amsterdam and Cleveland, 1999, p. 13), scenes painted by Maria van Oosterwyck - evoking the transience of life and foolishness of worldly concerns - were part of a rich, long-standing tradition established by artists such as Jacques de Gheyn I, Pieter Claesz. and van Oosterwyck's presumed teacher, Jan Davidsz. de Heem.  Like de Heem, van Oosterwijck incorporated fine details into her work.
