Marion Pope is best known for her painted portraits especially her series of California governors from 1915 to 1940.
Pope was born in San Francisco, California, in 1872. Her early art studies took place at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute in San Francisco where she was a pupil of Arthur Mathews. She later traveled to Paris, France, to study at the Academie Colarossi and with James Whistler. She returned to California and was married in 1903.
Pope was known to have lived in the Los Angeles area between 1905 and 1915 before moving to Oakland, California. She stayed in Oakland for many years where she painted and exhibited at the Oakland Art Gallery (1927). While living in the Bay Area she was an active member of the San Francisc
