Biography Mark Voris
From 1946, Mark Voris was an art teacher at the University of Arizona in Tucson and was a key figure in establishing the art center in Phoenix that became the forerunner of the Phoenix Art Museum.
He was born in Franklin, Indiana, and studied art at Franklin College and then at the University of Arizona in Tucson where he became a resident teacher and was active in arts groups there including the Palette and Brush Club.
In September, 1936, he was appointed Arizona Federal Arts Project State Supervisor, and under his direction, an art center was established in Phoenix. He had been frustrated because Tucson art groups showed little interest in organizing art classes for local residents. Headed by Philip Curtis, the
