Martha Moore Rathbone McDowell was born 1902 in New Britain, Connecticut, daughter of Martha Hart Moore and E.A. Moore, former president of Stanley Works. She graduated from Vassar College in 1924 and studied in New York at the Grand Central Art School and the Art Students League. She also studied with Alexander Archipenko, sculptor Heinz Warneke and Alfred H. Barr who later became the director of the Museum of Modern Art.
