Mary Anne Fossey Wisby was born in Sussex, England on Oct. 25, 1875. Mary Anne Fossey came to San Francisco in 1897 with her fiancé Jack Wisby; they were married upon arrival. She was a teacher with the Chinese Mission School in San Francisco until the earthquake of 1906 uprooted the young couple. They then moved across the bay to Marin County with residences in Bolinas, Inverness, and San Rafael. She was an artist with great talent, but allowed her husband to have the art career while she maintained the family home. Her works are rare. Mrs. Wisby died on Feb. 13, 1960 at the Laguna Honda Home in San Francisco.
