Mary Rogers Gregory (1839-1919),
Mary Rogers Gregory was born in Florida and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Later as an active painter in Atlanta, Georgia, she received numerous commissions for portraiture, both privately and from the Georgia State Legislature.
In 1883 the legislature commissioned her to depict Alexander Hamilton Stephens, former vice president of the Confederacy and a senator representing Georgia. Completed in 1884, it now hangs in the Georgia State Capitol Rotunda.
Gregory also painted a portrait of Senator Benjamin Hill and participated in many exhibitions in Atlanta along with her colleagues James Henry Moser and Horace James Bradley.
