Mary Carpenter, born in 1832 in Charlottesville, Virginia, was a water-color artist and decorative painter. In an article about her family published in the Hamilton County [Ohio] Historical Society bulletin, it states "Mary conducted the first classes in water-color painting when the [Cincinnati] Art Museum began such a program. She also worked as an artist at the famous Rookwood Pottery [in Cincinnati]. Some of her first pieces later were placed on exhibit in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts." She was a daughter of Ira Carpenter, who was born 26 Jun 1798 at Guilford, VT. He migrated to Charlottesville, Albemarle C
