Mary Ellen Doyle studied at Vassar and the Ruskin School of Fine Arts in Oxford, England, before attending at the School for the Arts (then the School for Fine and Applied Arts), where she received her B.F.A., and pursuing graduate studies at Pratt Graphic Arts Center, Columbia University, and New York University.
Though Doyle takes her inspiration from such artists as Paul Cézanne and Henri Matisse, she takes many of her images from the area around her Bridgehampton home - the skies, beaches, and farmland of the east end of Long Island. Though realistic, her paintings border on the abstract.
