A landscape painter, Mary Riley lived most of her life in Washington DC where she was born but traveled widely including to New Mexico, Mexico, Arizona, Europe and South America. One of the few surviving landscapes from those travels is titled The Arroyo, Arizona.
Her art training included the Art Students League, the Corcoran School of Art and summer classes with Henry Miller in Paris, and Henry Snell in St. Ives, Cornwall, England. She also studied with Birge Harrison.
She was a member of the Society of Washington Artists, the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, and the American Federation of Arts.
