Mary Harriet Simpson was born on August 28, 1893, in Van Buren, Michigan. She was the daughter of Frank G. and Leona (Johnson) Simpson. Raised in Michigan, Mary graduated in 1915 from Western State Normal School in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where she earned her teaching certificate with advanced credits in art. Additional information concerning further education or art studies is lacking.
 
On June 24, 1921, in Flint, Michigan, she married Hiram Wayne Travis. The couple moved to West Frankfort, Illinois, and later to Greenup, Illinois, where their son, Wayne, was born in 1925.
