Born in Sweden on Sept. 1, 1881. Hoos came to the U.S. with her family as an infant. She was educated in Wisconsin and lived most of her adult life in San Francisco. She later relocated and was known as the "Grandma Moses of Sacramento." She died at Sutter General Hospital on Nov. 19, 1964.
