Biography Mary Perry Stone
A painter of social protest murals and sculptor of mod-figurative works, Mary Stone was a sculptor on the New York Federal Arts Project during the Depression.
She was a student at the Art Students League when she was only 15, and later attended the Traphagen School of Fashion and Design in New York City. However, extra classes at the New School of Social Research turned her interest to sculpture. One of her pieces, entered by teacher Aaron Goodleman, won a prize at a Metropolitan Museum competition, and this success helped her get the job with the Federal Arts Project.
