Matthew Harris Jouett was born April 22, 1788 in what is now Mercer County, Kentucky. He was the son of Captain John "Jack" Jouett, Jr. and Sallie Robards. The father of Matthew is remembered for his gallant ride in 1781, which saved Governor Thomas Jefferson and the Virginia legislature from being captured by the British.
Matthew Jouett entered Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky in 1804. He must have been able to receive some art instruction while a student, but after graduation, Matthew studied law under Judge George M.
