Born in Schonbaum near Danzig, Germany on Feb. 17, 1850. After sailing the seven seas for many years, Schmidt left Hamburg in 1872 for San Francisco where he was hired as a transfer man of the Daily Stock Report. He later did lithographic work for G. T. Brown & Company and for Korbel Brothers who manufactured cigar boxes, labels, and bands. He then established M. Schmidt & Company at 535 Clay Street and later relocated the business in Los Angeles where it was still operating in 1922. He died in San Francisco on May 22, 1936. Exh: Mechanics' Inst. (SF), 1890.
