Maxim M. Elias (1916-1966)
Working primarily with wood to create his sharply geometric sculptures, Maxim M. Elias was widely exhibited and won numerous awards in the 1940s and 1950s. Originally from St. Petersburg, Russia, Maxim studied at the University of Kansas, the University of Iowa, and eventually at the Ruskin Drawing School at the University of London. He then went on to study with Heinz Warneke at the Corcoran Museum of Art, and taught throughout the Washing D.C. area. Notable exhibition venues include the Smithsonian Institute, the Philadelphia Academy of Art, and the Obelisk Gallery.
