As the daughter of a German doctor and a Swiss woman, Meret Oppenheim grew up in liberal-bourgeois milieu and learned early at her grandparents in Carona about the work of known artists.  Impressed by Paul Klee's works, she left school at age 18 and went with Irène Zurkinden to Paris.  In Montparnasse she became acquainted with Alberto Giacometti and Pablo Picasso and had a passionate affair with Max Ernst in 1934.

An artistic major success was the fur cup with which she took part in a Surrealist exhibition and which was purchased by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.  In 1954 Meret Oppenheim had a studio in Bern, where she left a striking testimony of her work with a fountain sculpture in the capitol city.    ...  Displaying 750 of 1332 characters.
