Biography Meriva Carpenter
The following biography, submitted October 2004, has been provided by Terry L. Carpenter, a Carpenter family historian:
Meriva M. Carpenter was born 28 April 1802 in Ellington, Tolland County, Connecticut, a daughter of Dr. Ruggles and Juliana (Pierce) Carpenter. She married a cousin, Eli Carpenter, who was born in 1794 in Oxford, Grafton Co. New Hampshire, and they settled near the town of Homer, Cortland County, New York in an area that came to be called Carpenterville, now East River.
Eli was a successful miller and dyer, and they were prosperous enough to build a fine house which they filled with art treasures. The noted artist Sanford Thayer painted portraits of Eli Carpenter (displayed in the Phillips Library in Homer)
