Allavena, Michele (Bordighera, Italy 1863- San Remo, Italy 1949)
Born in Bordighera, he was raised in San Remo, where early on he showed promise as an artist. He first studied formally in Genoa under the important artist, Giuseppe Isola (1808-1893). He later moved to Florence where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, graduating after three years, and receiving the honor of a gold medal. Thereafter, he returned to San Remo. In 1886 he was in Rome, but soon returned to San Remo, where he took up a position as an art instructor at a local school.
The bulk of his known works are watercolors of the narrow streets, alleys, and gates of the old town sections of San Remo and Bordighera. A few oils are known, and they display a hig
