Biography Michiel Carree
Michiel Carree's artistic career is exemplary of the success the Italianate painters experienced throughout Europe in the late 17th century. He was born into a family of painters in The Hague and taught by Nicolaes Berchem, one of the leading Italianate artists.
Carree first settled in London and was later called to the Court of Berlin to succeed Abraham Begeyn, another Italianate and pupil of Berchem, as court painter. Michiel Carree followed his teacher in both style and choice of motifs, painting landscapes illustrating the simple lives of shepherds with warm colors and a peaceful atmosphere.
