Mordi Gassner was born in Harlem into a wealthy Jewish family of fur traders and was raised in Brooklyn. "Gassner appears to have been mostly self taught. Along with painting and print making he developed an extensive knowledge of both science and technology by spending considerable time at the New York Public Library."(1)
Gassner attended the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences (later Parsons) and the Art Students League, NY. In the 1920s, Gassner went Los Angeles where he worked with Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks on films such as The Thief of Baghdad. Guggenheim Fellowships in 1929 and 1930 allowed Gassner and his wife, dancer Augusta Klausner, to work in Florence, Italy.
