Biography   Nancy Haynes


Saying that she is excited by "the absence of decoration," Nancy Haynes creates minimalist abstract paintings with sponges using oil pigment on linen from her storefront studio in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn. In her works, she achieves a phosphorescent glow-in-the-dark effect by using sulfurous greenish gray pigments.

She was born in Connecticut in a military family, and the family moved frequently. In Marin County, California, she was especially inspired by Elsie Pomeroy from whom she observed that it was okay for a woman to be an artist and to have a place of one's own called a studio.

She attended college art classes but did not graduate and arrived in New York in 1967 and was briefly an adjunct professor of painting   ...  Displaying 750 of 1244 characters.
