Biography Neil Fujita
“Sadamitsu Fujita was born on May 16, 1921, in Waimea, Hawaii, where his father, a Japanese immigrant, worked as a blacksmith on a sugar plantation. The name Neil was assigned to him at his boarding school in Honolulu. After graduating from high school he moved to Los Angeles, where he took classes at the Chouinard Art Institute (now Cal Arts). His studies were cut short in 1942 when, as the child of Japanese immigrants, he was relocated to an internment camp in Wyoming.
In 1943 he enlisted in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, made up almost entirely of Japanese-American volunteers, which became the most highly decorated unit of World War II. He saw combat in Italy and France before working as a translator in
