Nellie Hertha Meyer was born in New York on August 23, 1881. Her father, the Swiss citizen August Meyer, a pianist, graduate of the Conservatory of Music in Stuttgart, came to the USA as a young man at the suggestion of his friend Edouard de Coppet, founder of the Flonzaley Quartet. In 1879 he married Katherine Jellinek and the couple settled definitely in New York.
