Nina Ullberg 1901–1993
Nina Grigorian was born on August 2, 1901, in the Baku region of Russia near the Caspian Sea in what is now Azerbaijan, the eldest child of Michail and Agolina “Lena” (Svestenov) Grigorian. At the age of three, she contracted polio and was severely crippled by the illness. In an effort to minimize the ravages of the illness, she was sent to a polio treatment center in the country’s Caucasus Mountains region. Throughout her recovery, to keep her hands and feet from stiffening, she was encouraged to play a pump organ and was taught to crochet by her grandmother, a skill she would continue throughout her life.
