Biography Nicola Ziroli
Nicola Victor Ziroli was born in Valcocchiato, Campobasso, Italy in 1908. At the age of six, he immigrated with his family to the United States, where his father established a business carving stone monuments. Ziroli first learned stone carving techniques as an apprentice to his father, then used his skills as a stone carver for sculptors and construction firms to work his way through school. In 1930, he graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago specializing not in sculpture, but in painting and illustration. In 1934 he received a W.P.A. grant, and over the following 2 years he produced over seventy canvases for the U.S. Government.
