Noel Coypel

Noel Coypel was active/lived in France.  Noel Coypel is known for figure, allegorical paintings.

Born in France on December 25, 1628, he fulfilled several commissions for his king and was appointed director of the French Academy in Rome in 1672.  Upon his return to France after four years, Copel was appointed director of the Academy of Painting.  Known for religious, allegorical scenes, his painting called Martyrdom of St. James hangs in Nôtre Dame Cathedral.

His sons Antoine, Noel-Nicholas, and his grandson Charles-Antoine Coypel  were also painters.

Noel Coypel died on December 24, 1707.
